In the intro, there's a really grotty flanger effect 
on the last three notes. I think it's actually the bass 
guitar with a really dirty sound, not actually playing 
anything but using a noise gate to turn the effect on 
and off. The effect stops when the bass part kicks in 
so that's probably what it is.
